Oprah I Forgive You

Ok, today is a triumphant moment.

The moment when I forgive my number one She-ro for . . .Well, for making me really mad!

It goes back to last year or so-- I didn't like the way the whole "forum on hip-hop" episodes went. I felt they were one sided and attacking and I am not used to that journalistic standard from my Auntie Harpo (as I affectionately call her). I just guess I expected more from her. I expected the ideas of pro hip-hop speakers not to seem to constantly get cut off. I expected to see at least one woman in the industry represented there. Then there was the refusals to sit with Ludacris, who has some questionable lyrics, but no more so than any other rapper and who does a lot of amazing things for this community.

Oprah for me embodied curvy black female fabulosity. She made it ok to be a big girl, articulate (aka be told your entire life that you talk white), caring, opinionated, philanthropic AND in love with the island of Maui more than even me!

But the attack on hip-hop episode felt wrong to me and although she did a lot of amazing things since I just didn't have the same love anymore, UNTIL. . .

I watched a couple of great episodes with Dr. Oz, that fantastic show with Montell and now this. . .

Oprah got a thing for Jay-Z. "He smells so good" " I like the man not the music" - - - I think what she is feeling is what we all KNOW he's got a big *ahem* EGO . . .

So I salute you Auntie Harpo for keeping it real. For being a girl that gets the giggles and fantasizes about a rich rapper every now and again like the rest of us.

I am feeling you on Jay-Z Auntie Harpo. Jigga may be called "camel" by some (which ok I admit I've laughed at on more than one occasion) but he DOES have that certain "swagga." Not only that his wife is my bff (in my head) BeyBey, and would my BeyBey settle? Never!

So Auntie Harpo your trip to BK and love of Sean Carter have brought me back to my senses. To love you for the amazing woman you are, even though we don't always agree, I love you and you are forgiven . . .

Bowling, Fried Chicken & Music?

One of the best ways for a curvy foodie like myself to find out what to eat is by subscribing to great newsletter's like Tasting Table, Urban Daddy, Thrillist & the like. This week Tasting Table DELIVERS with an article about BROOKLYN BOWL, a place that combines things I love to do---bowl (check), drink (enthusiastic check!) and eat yummy fried chicken.

The menu is inspired by the team behind the comfort food lovers of the Blue Ribbon outposts and includes delights (on it's preview menu--full menu this month): Blue Ribbons signature FRIED CHICKEN, Cajun-spiced "rock 'n' roll fries" ($7) topped with provolone and white cheddar; oyster po'boy sandwiches; and a half-rack of pork ribs painted with Brooklyn Lager barbecue sauce ($18).

Since this isn't diet food and because it is isn't fun to drink or bowl alone the calorie punching treats above should be shared with friends. Oh did I mention there's plenty of space to dance--making this a potentially calorie burning adventure. Lace up your rented shoes--it's time to get spanked bowling!

Yesterday T.I. was honored at VIBE Magazine's April Cover Issue Reception at the Eldridge in NYC. VIBE's April cover story "Cell Therapy" by VIBE Senior Editor Benjamin Meadows-Ingram, chronicles the superstar's history-making legal battle and gut-wrenching journey since his 2007 arrest related to illegal gun possession. T.I.'s Malcolm X-inspired VIBE cover photo was revealed at the private cocktail event, which was sponsored by Ed Hardy Vodka.

T.I. arrived straight from his afternoon visit to The Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx, where he spoke to at-risk youth about the importance of staying in school and avoiding the mistakes he's made. MTV was onsite, filming the experience as part of the aptly titled MTV Show, "T.I.'s Road to Redemption." The invite only VIP event included special guests Nick Cannon, Grand Hustle artist Young LA, Atlantic Records recording artist Maino, Warner Music Executive Vice President Kevin Liles, Atlantic Records' Chairman and COO, Julie Greenwald, Atlantic Records' EVP, Head of Urban Music, Mike Kyser, and VIBE executives, CEO Steve Aaron, Publisher Edgar Hernandez and Editor-in-Chief Danyel Smith.

More G.O.O.D. Music From Kanye

According to THE COUCH SESSIONS, Kanye has added Mr Hudson and The Library as the latest signers to his label G.O.O.D. Music.

Say what you will about Kanye but the man has an amazing ear for new, interesting and progressive music*. And Mr. Hudson and The Library is no exception to this rule. I am liking their music (listen here) and two of my favorite tracks on Kanye's 808s and Heartbreak, Paranoid and Streetlights, are his musical productions. I can't wait to hear what he does for the Blueprint 3 for Jigga.

They are the kind of band that makes me want to see them live. Good music for a long drive, or to write a blog to. (smile)

Pizza-less Recession

So I am a rarity, an American woman who does not ADORE pizza.

I like a slice now and again, but usually prefer some type of protein based comfort food (like a burger or wings) as opposed to a slice of pizza. However, since I have moved to NY my taste for commercial pizza (Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's) has gone from barely existent to negligible since there are plenty of great slices available from local pizzerias.

But, for once I am not alone in my pizza-less desire. The economy is really hitting the major pizza chains according to a recent article from the Wall Street Journal.

According to the WSJ "while the overall U.S. fast-food category experienced compounded annual growth of 6.4% from 2002 to 2007, pizza sales rose only 2.5% during that period." The WSJ article goes on further to say that pizza chains are losing out as Americans tastes require more healthy and organic food options on one hand (maybe the NYC transfat ban and calorie postings are working?) and on the other hand they are losing to less expensive burger and sandwich options.

This trend isn't surprising if you have been paying any attention to pizza chain ads. Pizza Hut now offers pasta and Domino's now sells sandwiches obvious attempts to delve back into the hearts and stomachs of the average American.

So it seems, that my preference for a burger is part of a larger trend and I'm not the outcast I once believed I was!

Why I Don't Do Primates

I get why people like primates. They look like little hairy human babies. They can do human things like surf the internet and appear in commercials.

But, it is JUST this reason that they CREEP me out. Well Chimps particularly creep me out. It's not that I don't agree that they are REALLY cute and remarkable creatures. It's just that they are a little too human for me.

Chimpanzees are 98.76% identical to us genetically but they are 5-7 times stronger than us. Their bones are denser, their skin is tougher. But, they are behavior is decidedly human, they remember, they can plan, and their males are very territorial and unafraid to use violence to maintain their territory.

Case in point this week in Conneticut a woman's friend was almost killed by a pet chimp. Imagine something with hard to penetrate skin, dense bones and 7 times your strength freaking out on you. There is speculation that some xanax tea the woman gave the chimp previous to the attack may have set him off. The woman tried to stab the chimp, but that only "aggrevated" the chimp.

There was another case in Southern California a few years ago where chimps attacked a couple trying to give their chimp "son" a birthday cake. They ripped the mans balls off--and threw them over 20 yards---

YEAH MAN--I DON'T DOOOOOOO CHIMPS!!!!!

I loved Michelle's little dress and jacket ensemble. Here is my version of a way to rock the same basic look.

I'd start with this Vera Wang Mustard Palm Silk Belted Dress (on SALE now at Bluefly.com!) and pair that with these beautiful AlexanderMcQueen green and tan platform pumps (Zappos.com).

I like how the belt that emphasizes the waist and think the peep toe is a sexy look.

Inauguration Style: Michelle Obama

I am super excited to have people care about first lady fashion. Oh how I wish I lived in the age of Jackie O, and could have worn some of the styles that she continues to embody. So I am excited by the conservative sexy style that Michelle Obama brings to the White House and the nation.

To the very important event of her husbands inauguration, Michelle Obama wore a yellow-gold sheath dress with matching coat by Isabel Toledo with green gloves from J. Crew and Jimmy Choo shoes.

I am loving the way her gloves compliment her outfit. The gold brocade is understated yet dressy enough to fit the occasion. I really love the color of the dress which looks great against her recent Hawaiian tan. I think she coulda worn a cute little hat too, but maybe that's just me going overboard, I'm saying though, it's FREEZING in DC!

All in all I am happy to say the first African-American woman present keeps it fierce!

I Want Redhead's After Hours

TastingTable.com recommends THE REDHEAD for good, gourmet late night eats in the east Village. the East Village is always good for late night eats over a beer or a huge bottle of water (depending on how drunk you already are). I am a big fan of the gastropub-- a place where you can get great drinks and really stellar, simple yet refined food.

THE REDHEAD's chef Meg Grace serves up some of my favorite meals to eat late at night: super crispy fried chicken, a delicious sounding burger with blue cheese and applewood smoked bacon and BACON PEANUT BRITTLE.

Yes, I said Bacon. Peanut. Brittle. It sounds horrible and fantastic and apparently is one of their best sellers.

Who wants to meet me for a late drink and snack?

According to SOHH.com My girl, wig wearing, tell it like it is, thick chick with a mean shoe game is BACK on the air. Wendy Williams will premiere this July, and will be taped live daily in New York City.

I will admit, I was one of those people who didn't quite "understand" Wendy but I like her. I appreciate the things she has had to overcome to get to where she is, and really liked the mainly positive attitude she took on her show.

I am all about the natural short hair thing, but some people just look better with long weavy hair and that's the way I feel about the Gabrielle Union who is looking GREAT on the set of Chelsea Lately.

I am coming around to Gabby--I wasn't always the biggest fan. But she is making mid-30's look very nice and every interview I have ever seen with her makes her seem like a girl I could be friends with.

Which means Phylicia Rashad is bringing sexy back . . Although the woman is 60 years old and still gorgeous, Jenny Craig or not!

Obama Knows His Comfort Food

This week I have been missing the weather, aloha spirit and FOOD of Hawaii. Normally when I go to Maui I make a stop at DA KITCHEN in Kihei and get a plate lunch. The plate lunch is full of yummy foods and carbs and I love it. I usually get so much food that there is enough to eat the next day.

The typical Hawaiian plate lunch consists of some type of protein or main entree, two scoops of white rice and potato macaroni salad (although Da Kitchen let's you be slightly healthy and get a green salad instead). My favorite plate lunch entrees are Kalua Pork and Teriyaki Beef or Chicken.

The other great thing about plate lunch is that my homie and yours O-ba-ma, yes Barry Obama, recently liste the plate lunch as one of his favorites. READ ABOUT THAT HERE

While in Maui a few weeks ago I brought back a bottle of ALOHA Teriyaki sauce from the islands so I could re-create the meal here. I made just a plain ole macaroni salad (minus the potato) and baked instead of grilling the chicken. It was DELICIOUS, the teriyaki flavors and the macaroni salad and rice all go so perfectly together.

I suggest you try your own plate lunch recipe on a cold winter night. It's sure to leave you comforted.

I love the folks over at RUSH Philanthropic, they always have such great events and everyone over on that staff really has a heart for giving back.

Last night hundreds of at-risk New York City youth affiliated with Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation-supported programs had the time of their lives last night at Rush Philanthropic's Ninth Annual Youth Holiday Party sponsored by Target. It all happened at The Fillmore NY @ Irving Plaza. Dawn Richards of Danity Kane hosted the holiday party which included appearances by Russell Simmons, hip-hop artists Jim Jones and Teyana Taylor, JoJo Simmons (son of Reverend Run) of Run's House on MTV, BET's Alesha Renee, radio personality Egypt, America's Next Top Model Jaslene Gonzalez, TV hit "Heroes" Jamie Hecter, platinum selling singer/producer Ryan Leslie, Que from the group Day 26 on MTV's "Making The Band", Darrelle Revis from the New York Jets and many more.

The night was a huge success with special performances by Rush youth groups The Brooklyn Steppers, Multicultural Music Group and Urban Word and the Annual Rush Kid Dance Off, judged by The Retro Kids. DJ Envy spun the tunes as the kids screamed with delight as celebrity guests greeted the kids while they received raffle prizes such as the X Box 360 gaming system, Hasbro 'U Dance game signed by superstar Chris Brown, two MacBook computers, an Apple iPod, tickets to a Cavaliers v. Knicks game at Madison Square Garden and many more special gifts. The Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation is dedicated to providing disadvantaged urban youth with significant exposure and access to the arts, as well as providing exhibition opportunities to under-represented artists and artists of color.

So for whatever reason on Saturday I was inundated with cat moments.

Cat moment #1:
Walking to target we pass a man in a Lexus asking directions. I turn my head and there in the car is a cat with a cone raincoat looking thing over it's head it meowed at me (inaudible thru the window). I almost fell out laughing.

Cat moment #2:
yes, we have cats. Yes, we bought them catnip yesterday. Hilarity ensued.

And the best, Cat Moment #3:
We decided to watch Cats 101 on ANIMAL PLANET. There was a woman on there who makes yarn with a SPINNING WHEEL out of----wait for it---CAT FUR, yeah, Cat Fur.

So the other day while I was at my stylist getting my hair cut & colored I laughingly referred to myself as a recessionista. (I think I saw that on UGLY BETTY or read it in VOGUE.)

Nonetheless, i began to start thinking about it, and it is true. How does a person addicted to beauty and obsessed with food, drinks and general merriment survive when pay is meager and budgets are tight.

I have decided to share my tips & tricks here and welcome the opinions of those of us who are frugal but still like our "stuff."

There ARE always a way to find a cute item for less.

I like to study trends and designers so that when I go to a store that has designer finds like DE JANIERO, MARSHALLS, CENTURY 21, BURLINGTON, etcetera I can know if I am really getting a deal. Often other legitimate yet less costly designers emulate a style or pattern that you can pick up. WARNING: be prepared to spend ALOT of time sifting through CRAP!

I also sign up for tons of e-mail newsletters. All the items in this post are my picks from shopping the Barney's Online Private sale sent to me from Billion Dollar Babes ( i LOVE that name).

Real Housewives, Real Beef

Thank Goodness for YBF.com they are reporting on the BEEF between Real Housewives of ATL Lisa Wu-Hartwell and some obviously married dude's mistress Kim. She is apparently scared for her life because Lisa is stalking her and leaving her threatning messages. I think this is HILARITY. Wasn't Kim the one talking about how she was "black"---hmm you don't mess with crazy pseudo upperclass black folks, they "don't play that". I think it's great how Kim is smart enough to create drama to extend her 15 minutes of fame for her (ahem) singing career. Seriously, singing? Jeez. I can't wait to see this infamous reunion show. It's funny how when an established reality show (Housewives, The Real World) gets more than one black woman together there is BOUND to be a fight---what is THAT really all about, hmmmmm

Buffonery Obsession Of the Moment

Real Chance At Love.

I know, i know, i know but this show is straight up comedy. Some of these girls are just soo crazy, it is obvious they picked them because of their crazy. The seemingly notable exception to this is Rabbit, who is a beautiful young woman. She seems very strangely out of place amongst the pollo-heads, I mean a girl who is polite and pretty and knows how to string a sentence together does not belong on any show that VH1 has the name LOVE attached to. And then I read the blog of my gorgeous Scorpio lil sis Karen Civil and I find out she has the same estimation of the lovely Jessica aka Rabbit. READ ALL ABOUT HER HERE.

I can appreciate the pretty girls on their hustle grind, video vixens, models and all that. ("do, do, do that gurl") Still, this show is like watching a horrible car wreck--you feel sleezy afterwards, but it doesn't make you stop watching it. Although out of PRINCIPAL I refuse to use DVR space to record it (plus it's VH1 they are good for a marathon.)

While many older Americans, who marched and struggled so hard so Senator Obama could run for president of the United States never dared to believe in his candidacy's real potential, young people, particularly the hip-hop community, had faith and their imagination became our reality.

The election of Barack Obama, a resounding progressive voice, is a clear reflection of hip-hop politics. It is a reflection of the 35 million people who downloaded Ekhard Tolle's "The New Earth," and all of the other popular books espousing this new, emerging consciousness. Promoting love, compassion and generosity over fear, anger and greed; promoting lasting peace through dialogue and opportunity will be more economic to the American people in these troubled times than the promotion of war. Obama"s election as president is a beautiful testament to the American collective consciousness that is flowering. This more loving consciousness will be necessary to protect us from some of our hurtful human choices and tendencies. We will need it to create balance with the constantly emerging advances in technology so, going forward, we can use these advances in a positive way to lift up Mother Earth and all her inhabitants.

I don't think I'm overstating it when I say that today, I feel like America has dodged a bullet. Let's support this beautiful leader to do the work necessary to promote and execute on the change agenda we all voted for. Let's each do our part to insure that this is a transformative time in America, where our country can be a leader in creating a positive and lasting change in the world.

T.I. Votes for the First Time

T.I. went to the polls YESTERDAY for the FIRST time ever. Yes, EVER.

T.I. is the national spokesperson of the RESPECT MY VOTE! non-partisan Get Out The Vote initiative, created by Reverend Lennox Yearwood, Jr. and the Hip Hop Caucus (HHC). The Hip Hop Caucus and the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) have partnered in a national RESPECT MY VOTE! GOTV Bus Tour of 18 cities through Election Day.

T.I. has been a very vocal and engaged activist in helping to get young people to register and now, to get them to the polls to vote. With his prior difficulties with the law, TI made it his point to emphasize that, while he thought he was ineligible to vote, others needed to get out to the polls to make a difference in their lives and their communities. Recently, he did further research on his own and discovered he was, in fact, still eligible to vote. Going to the polls early this morning in Atlanta, Georgia, was a transformative experience for him.

"Feels like I've taken advantage of my right to become a part of the democracy," declared Clifford Harris aka T.I.. "It was definitely worth standing in line and doing all the things people complain about voting. I think it's more than worth it."

I have spoken to many who have felt disenfranchised by the voting system who have become re-energized to politics because of the historical and important nature of this election. Even in the Atlanta area where people are waiting for hours in line to conduct early voting, people are coming out in record numbers to make sure that their voice is heard. I am glad hip-hop is actually going out to vote, so many young people look to rappers like a T.I. to influence their behavior. Let's just hope this air of social responsibility carries through even after the election.

Urban Beauty Collective (the nation’s largest independent retail promotional network for black hair professionals) recently launched a Ning based social network for black beauty salons, barbershops, stylists and those of us non-professionals who want to be on the cutting edge of urban hair design.

One nice way that the site indicates the type of community member you are is by asking yourself to be identified as either a beauty professional (”I am a stylist/barber”) or as a non-professional (”I am Black hair”). It’s a cute way of making the non-professional members of the community feel like experts.

Globalgrind.com, the website launched by Russell Simmons to aggregate the concerns and interests of the hip-hop community, held their exclusive launch event, sponsored by SMARTWATER, in NYC on Wednesday evening. The launch event had celebs, politicos and hip-hop taste makers alike on the red carpet and sitting cozy in the plush couches at NYC hot spot Taj.

But, this wasn’t just any launch event, it was also a display of hip-hop political consciousness. At 9pm the music was shut down for the debates. Watching a debate at a party? Well it makes sense given the nature of the event. GlobalGrind.com has had a few different designs over the past year and a half but has now officially launched glossier and edgier. Global Grind marries video, photos and new stories that are voted on and submitted by users. They are currently running a “Countdown to Change” initiative using where they are using the web to connect voters.

Supporting Russell and CEO Navarrow Wright were celebs and hip-hop taste makers such as: Ludacris, Cedric the Entertainer, Kevin Liles, Malinda Williams, D-Nice, Kevin Powell, Naughty by Nature, Stephon Marbury, Aubrey (formerly of Danity Kane) & Dawn (currently of Danity Kane), Day 26 and (drum roll) Twelve Pack of “I Love NY” (yes, the randomness of his attendance baffles me!).

The event was fun and it was great to see people, celebs and normal folks alike, take a genuine interest in one of the most important presidential debates of our times.

This Dress in Italian jersey I found at Saks is gorgeous---I got the gorgeous save the dates for my girls wedding today in the mail and now I'm getting excited for their nuptials, they are such a beautiful couple and she is a great woman and deserves happiness and love. Plus given I am going to be a small part in the wedding, it gives me the PERFECT excuse to buy a new dress!

WINE FOR EVERYDAY DRINKING

I enjoy a great bottle of wine and champagne, but for everyday drinking the $30-$40 wines can sometimes be over my head, but the lovely liquor store around the corner has a few gems. One of them being Golden Kaan Pinotage. Pinotage grapes are distinctively South African and are found in the Western Cape, which is the wine growing region of the country. It is both a Pinot Noir (one of my faves) and a Cinsaut (yeah i didn't know either) grape.

I love Pinotage's because of their gorgeous jewel ruby color and deep fruity flavor. Pintoage is great because it's not as sweet and deep as say, a merlot (I'm not a big merlot fan), and is one of those great wines that both people who love wine and who rarely drink wine can enjoy. My local liquor store has the 2003 Pinotage in stock and is about $9 dollars a bottle---that's right UNDER $10. I think I should order a case---and give away a few bottles as gifts.

Ok so if you know me at all you know that I adore and am borderline obsessed with Beyonce, whom I affectionately call BeeYawnSuh or Bey Bey. As Wendy Williams would say Bey Bey is a friend in my head. We'd go shopping together, watch TV, listen to music, have dinner in dark sunglasses with distinguished rappers. LOL

But I really love Beyonce because there is something about her talent, spirit and drive that inspire me. I woke up this morning feeling like crap, so I knew that I had to go to the gym. I struggled on what playlist to put on and landed on my "Beyonce Experience" that I made the day after her concert in New York. She gave me just enough of that fuck 'em girl but also that sisterhood girl power-ness that this Marlborough and Spelman alumna (in case u didn't know I choose single sex education from 7th grade-end of college) needed and loves.

I was just thinking about how I needed a new BeeYawnSuh album and I get a little teaser video form the good folks at Columbia Records. Enjoy---all I have to say is she got a new anthem "If you like it, u shoulda put a ring on it" GENIUS BeyBey GENIUS!!!

So I am trying to hold off until after I come back from Spelman/Morehouse homecoming, but I am thinking I may want to cop this dress from BLUEFLY.COM for my girl's wedding in March. Her colors are champagne and peachy and I'll be reading a scripture, so I think that this could be perfect. On Thursday October 2nd, I had the opportunity to attend the launch event for TAPAS YOGA, a weekly yoga class at the Ailey Extension taught by Porschla Coleman. Coleman is a certified Jivamukti instructor, philanthropist, model and as you may better know her, ex-girlfriend of Russell Simmons. I was a little nervous because I’ve only practiced kundalini yoga but haven’t practiced in over 9 months and while Kundalini focuses on breathe and mantras, I’d heard that Jivamukti was much more physically grueling. But, I was curious and felt up for the challenge.

Before the 90-minute yoga session began, hip-hop mogul and devoted yoga practitioner Russell Simmons spoke about the transforming effects of yoga and how the practice of the principles of yoga can transform not only one’s body and mind, but one’s community. He stressed that as society continues to bombard us with stimulation it is essential for one to be balanced and achieve balance with one’s surroundings. His strong belief in the transformative power of yoga led him to sponsor people of color to train with his yogis and co-founders of the Jivamukti school in the U.S., David Life and Sharon Gannon, who also briefly spoke about Jivamukti practice.

After the inspirational talks were over Porshla assisted by Luis Davila, began our Jivamukti experience. We began the class by dedicating our yoga practice for the evening to someone who we wanted to send positive energy to and then began to chant in with “om’s.” Once we began the practice took us through a grueling yet relaxing set of fast paced asanas (yoga positions) including “the crow”, “shoulder & head stands”, “warrior’s pose” and “downward dog. “ It was challenging to say the least but Coleman and Davila’s calming voices and individualized attention (even in a room of well over 30 people) got us through it. The other great things about the class was the SPECTACULAR view from the all glass windows on the 5th floor of the Ailey Extension and the music, which was a blend of R&B, hip-hop and classic hindu chanting. The great thing about this class was that it was a great blend of the rigorous physical aspects of yoga while still stressing the importance of the spirituality of the practice.

The class challenged my mind, my body (I’m not sure I will be able to walk tomorrow) and my soul. I left feeling free, invigorated and with a renewed commitment to myself. With such reasonable class prices ($12-$16/session) I’ll be there next Tuesday from 6:15-7:45 working out my chakra’s with Porschla and company.

A few of you out there have been ON me to start a blog--you know a place to collect all the randomness that is my thoughts. To expound upon tweets and Facebook statuses. So here it is my life on the page for all to see.

I have been also struggling about what to write about-- I am a hip-hop bohemian, both bougie and ghetto. My passions include cooking, music, fashion and television. So you will get a little of all of that but from my own neo-romantical (yeah, i know that's not a word), hip-hop, r&b, bougie hood sensibility.

I've called this blog "beats, wine and life" as a homage to one of my favorite hip-hop groups of all time and to describe how my life unfolds in between drinking, my own unique musical soundtrack (usually playing in my head) and how my life either falls in place or falls apart as a result.

I hope you enjoy my journey.
